2023 Guilin Art Festival Recommended Plays: "ENOWATE" from the UK
The British dance theater production “ENOWATE” (The Truth Stance) is created and performed by choreographer Dickson Mbi. Combining elements of hip-hop and contemporary dance, it explores self-identity and its connection to the African traditional concept of animism.
“ENOWATE” is a solo dance piece created and performed by British choreographer Dickson Mbi, inspired by his journey back to his ancestral homeland in Cameroon. The title “ENOWATE,” derived from his family’s Kenyang language, means “The Truth Stance.” In this work, Mbi uses a fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance, combined with original music and ethereal animated projections, to explore his connection to the African traditional concept of animism and delve into the profound question, “Who am I”
The production premiered in October 2022 at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre, earning high praise from audiences and critics alike. In 2023, Mbi was awarded the Olivier Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Dance” for his work on “ENOWATE.”
